Our Learning Spaces

The 51爆料 Classroom

DNP Cargilfield 51爆料 Morning 04.03.24 91

Our purpose-built, spacious 51爆料 consists of an open play space that is curated into curricular areas; Playdough and Messy Play Area, Creative Corner, Maths and Problem Solving Table, Topic tray, Home Corner, Small World Play and Construction Area, Writing and Mark Making Area, Sand Play Area and Water Play Station. There is also a separate room that we call the Quiet Room where the children have a Book Corner and quieter play resources as well as sensory toys, here the children can retreat if they are in need of some rest time or want to engage in more mindful play. All these areas are resources with quality open ended resources that the children can choose from. We strive for as many of our resources as possible to be natural and use neutral tones throughout to create a calm and engaging environment where the children鈥檚 learning and engagement take centre stage.

The 51爆料 Garden

We are very fortunate that our 51爆料 opens out onto a large natural garden and playground. In this space the children can access;

  • 2 different balancing courses
  • 2 tree houses/ climbing fames
  • A digging area, fitted with wheelbarrows spades and rakes and sieves
  • A large sand pit with sand resources
  • Water exploration and play area stocked with pipes, water toys and water troughs
  • Construction area complete with crates, builders hats and large blocks
  • A fully fitted Mud Kitchen
  • A writing and drawing area.
  • An outdoor reading hut.
  • Access to bikes trikes and gross motor development resources

All these areas promote; creative thinking, problem solving skills, investigation, observation, scientific testing, develop social skills, promote fine and gross motor development as well as ample opportunity for imaginative play. We strive to ensure that our children spend at least 40% of their time in nursery in outdoor spaces, benefiting from fresh air and different learning opportunities.

Our Growing Patch

Our growing patch consists of 2 large beds and various potting areas. These raised beds are a place of discovery, exploration and learning. We aim to involve the children in every step of the growing process. Gardening is an extended sensory and learning process which starts with researching the right plants to grow, preparing the soil, digging and planting, watering, weeding and observing the plants growing and flowering. The best part is we use the produce we grow in our cooking, which the children love.

Beach Kindergarten

Beach kindergarten

Our weekly Beach Kindergarten on Cramond Beach is perfect for sand play and outdoor exploration. Our beach program is led by the children鈥檚 questions and discoveries (as well as the weather conditions we have on the day). We actively encourage the children to determine the direction that their play takes and plan what resources we bring to the beach based upon the previous weeks interests.聽 These activities and experiences range from windy day play kits, sand building packs or observation and investigation tools. Whatever the weather we always have fun at the beach!

Outdoor Learning Centre and Woodland Spaces

We are privileged to offer a wide range of natural settings for the children to immerse themselves in. These spaces include our dedicated Outdoor Learning Centre, as well as two woodland areas. These allow us to spend prolonged periods of time in natural areas. Our bespoke outdoor learning program ensures the children have the opportunity to build real life skills and participate in memorable moments such as camp cooking and fire building and risk awareness. The play in these areas is led by the children and the adults are able to extend and resource play and exploration. The children have the choice to access these spaces for 2 half days a week. These spaces are also used by groups for group time learning.

Access to Whole School Spaces

The children also have supervised access to the main School Library where they experience a story telling session with our librarian every week! This helps us to build the children鈥檚 love of books through memorable moments snuggled up by the fire, while puppets and books emerge from our story telling chest.

We also use Astroturf and our Sports Hall for various clubs and group activities
